Like the Space Shuttle, Roger Clemens received extra help from solid rocket boosters. Unlike the Space Shuttle, The Rocket can’t separate from them. Had he owned up to his shortcomings in the wake of the Mitchell report, he’d still be getting shelled by the moralizers, but he wouldn’t be facing potential criminal charges.
Mike Celizic hit the nail squarely:
But none of that covers the fact that that Clemens was there, licking his lips so hard it’s a wonder he’s got any skin left on them, while trying to explain why his former trainer, Brian McNamee told the truth about everyone except Clemens.
To me, that seals it. Why would Pettite lie about Clemens? Why would McNamee be telling the truth about everyone else but Clemens?
Like I’ve said, I abhor this round of Congressional grandstanding, as this ought to be a matter between Major League Baseball, to be resolved among players and owners. It’s their game, their money, their credibility. Let them work it out. Congress ought to have no dog in this fight.
That said, Clemens has really blown it. He’s guilty. He knows it. Everyone else knows it. The only issue is whether there is enough evidence to bust him for perjury.
