Conservative Episcopalians Consider Split from ECUSA

Perhaps our resident Episcopalian–Christina–can give us the inside scoop on this piece of news.

Not sure I like it–we have too many denominations as it is–but I can certainly understand why one would want to go this route.

On the other hand, there is the Law of Unintended Consequences. One only needs to look at some of the conservative Baptist denominations that broke off from the Southern Baptists–because the SBC had gone liberal for a while–to see where this can lead.

Still, there are other denominations that, having broken off from a liberal mainline, have managed to thrive. Examples would include the Presbyterian Church of America, represented by our pastoral consultant Rev. Russ Westbrook.

Dealing with Somali Pirates

Perhaps our friends in the U.S. Navy could take some oil tankers–or heck, a few cruise ships–man them with Navy SEALs and Recon Marines (with appropriate armament, of course), and go on a luxury cruise. When the Somali nutbags show up, they’ll be mightily-surprised at the precision, rapidity, and magnitude of the welcome they receive.

German Troops…

Once among the most formidable in the world, are now too fat to fight, and drink too much.

A German parliamentary report has revealed that in 2007 German forces in Afghanistan consumed about 1.7 million pints of beer and 90,000 bottles of wine. During the first six months of this year 896,000 pints of beer were shipped to German forces in Afghanistan. British and U.S. bases in the country enforce a strict ban on alcohol.

The physical condition of the soldiers was already in question after a German armed forces report found that 40 percent of its soldiers aged 18-29 were overweight, compared to 35 percent of the civilian population of the same age.

The report, published in March, concluded that the Bundeswehr lived on beer and sausages while shunning fruit and vegetables. It said that an overdeveloped bureaucracy was also contributing to a “passive lifestyle” on the part of the soldiers.
