  1. Initial thoughts
    (1) It’s a tragedy

    (2) She’s black. When it comes to domestic violence charges, they aren’t taken very seriously.

    (3) If she were white they would have sent search parties, not just a car or two to consider it “doing all they could”.

  2. Carrie: How about this (emphasis mine):

Over the past three years, Johnson contacted police on several occasions to report domestic abuse. In 2005, she said Brown had threatened to kill her, according to records provided by the Tampa Police Department.

“He also hit me several times with the gun,” Johnson wrote in a statement given to police. “I just wanna solve this matter by keeping him far away from me.”

The following year, she told police he’d punched her while she was five months pregnant. The case was closed after she declined to pursue criminal charges.

The point here is that she appears to have been quite indecisive in her dealings with this man. She seems to have gone back to him time after time, even refusing to press charges.

Here’s what is wrong with the picture:

    (1) WTH is she doing choosing mates like him in the first place?
    (2) WTH did she refuse to press charges when she could have?

How much you want to bet me that her relationship with him was on-again/off-again?

And if you think I’m being mean, I’m Mother Teresa next to Dr. Laura on these matters.

Amir, I think you’re forgetting the cardinal rule of femininity that The Enemy preys on: we think we can actually change the one that we are with. This, in all likelihood, is what provoked her to stay with him: she thought she could change him.
Ame – please weigh in. Isn’t that something that the abused woman has to admit: “it wasn’t her fault”?
It would be nice if all women could be as cut and dry in their thinking as the 41 year old engineer, but sadly they often lack that ability.
For the record, I don’t think you’re being mean. I just think you are forgetting some basic rules of how women operate.

  4. Carrie: They don’t lack the ability; they simply are not exercising it.

Women, like men, have the capacity to think.

But having the capacity and exercising it are two different things. (And failures in that department are hardly restricted to females, as there are no small number of men who act out the role of rescuer, and dig themselves into many holes.)

He was threatening her, hitting her with a weapon. This was not a one-time incident.

That she refused to press charges, that she refused to take out an EPO, that she likely refused to use her rights to protect herself, is quite telling here. I’ll bet money she took him in.

Oh, and BTW, unless I missed something, I see no indication that they were married.

  5. Since I’m working on not being stubborn . . .
    I agree with you.
However, would you agree that there is a disconnect? She knew she was endangered, but she didn’t accept help she was offered. She didn’t accept it because either
    (1) She thought she could change him
    (2) She couldn’t imagine life without him
    (3) She felt she had no right to judge him because she felt deserved the treatment
    (4) all of the above

Also, I’ll contend that the police could have searched for more than a couple of hours one night.

    This was indeed a tragedy.

  6. yes, she was in denial.

she was also repeating a pattern from her childhood – a victim of abuse.

it takes incredible guts to move from ‘victim’ to ‘survivor’

knowing God, i must believe He gave her at least one opportunity to make that choice for the sake of herself and her children and her grandchildren.

now that baton has been passed onto her kids. hopefully one of them will pick it up and run with it.
